Theme: Making Right Choices
Ngaka Modiri Molema District Life Skills and HIV Unit held a Teenage Pregnancy Awareness event at Maselwanyane Secondary School near Mafikeng on Tuesday, 27 February 2024.
The aim of the event was to get feedback from learners regarding the previous visits which were conducted by the unit and stakeholders. In attendance it was learners from Maselwanyane and Seleje Secondary Schools, educators and SGB representatives.
The purpose of the event was to create an awareness on early engagement in sexual activities, with the aim of reducing the number of teenage pregnancy rate amongst learners.
Presentation were from:
- Department of Health
- Child Protection Unit
- Social Worker
- SAPS
- Community Media Trust
Learners showcased different activities which were a reflection that they have learned and understand the causes of teenage pregnancy and its consequences.
The following items were performed by learners:
- Drama
- Dialogues
- Poem
- Gumboot dance
A professional nurse Ms Mathapelo Seiphetlho motivated learners and encouraged them not to be scared to visit health facilities; learners who are 12 years need not be accompanied by parents. The learners were also told about a new service at the clinic”happy hours” from 14h00 to 16h00 whereby learners can engage with a professional nurse at the clinic to assist them with Life Orientation homework and to answer any health related questions.
It was a fruitful day as learners engaged with all the presentations and they promised that they will not add to the current statistics of pregnancy learners.
