After much anticipation and dedicated efforts, Sarafina Secondary School in Ikageng, Potchefstroom is finally opening its doors to welcome its first cohort of learners. This milestone marks a significant step forward in addressing the educational needs of the Ikageng community, made possible through the decisive intervention of MEC for Education in the North West province, Ms Viola Motsumi.
โWe are thrilled to see Sarafina Secondary School finally come to life. This project has faced numerous challenges, but through collaboration and unwavering commitment, we have reached this pivotal moment. The opening of this school is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about providing our children with a safe, modern, and inspiring learning environment, said Motsumi.
For this year, Sarafina Secondary School will accommodate 721 eager Grade 8 and 9 learners. This includes the Grade 9 cohort who were previously platooning at neighbouring Ditaelong Secondary School. Notably, the school is now equipped with running water, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic learning experience for all.
Parents in Ikageng community, who have long advocated for the schoolโs completion, expressed their delight at the progress made.
Following a recent meeting with education officials, they are confident that their children will finally have access to the quality education they deserve.
โThis is a dream come true,โ said Maleshane Seitshiro an SGB chairperson, resident and parent to a Sarafina Secondary School learner.
โOur children were facing overcrowding and limited resources at their previous schools. Sarafina Secondary School represents a new beginning, and we are grateful to MEC Motsumi and everyone involved for making it a reality.โ
The partial opening of Sarafina Secondary School also addresses the issue of overcrowding in Grade 8 classes across the region. With many learners transitioning from primary school, the school alleviates the pressure on existing facilities and ensures a more conducive learning environment for all.
While construction continues, the opening of Sarafina Secondary School marks a significant victory for the community and a testament to the unwavering commitment of the North West Department of Education.
As the school progresses towards full operation, it promises to be a beacon of hope and opportunities for generations of Sarafina learners to come.
