NW EDUCATION ENCOURAGES LEARNERS TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS

The North West Department of Education encourages all learners to participate in athletics as a way of leading a healthy lifestyle.

With learners back at school for the first quarter, the first activity during this season in the school enrichment calendar is athletics.

Different schools across the province started competing at school level, further proceeded to cluster level, followed by sub-district level until the best teams compete at national level.

The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi emphasized that sport is good for the learners.

“I take this moment to encourage our learners to participate in athletics and sport in general. Sport will be able to take learners away from substance abuse and other social challenges like bullying, teenage pregnancy, crime, etc. As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, said MEC Motsumi.

MEC Motsumi says that she will be launching Wednesday school sports in Bojanala District soon. She says other districts will follow suit and all learners in schools would be expected to take part in sport.

“I am pleading with parents to ensure that children take part in sport. Exercise not only changes your body, it shapes your mind, your attitude and your mood. When learners exercise they will be able to understand easily what their teachers are teaching them”, said MEC Motsumi.

The North West Department of Education is expected to host the Provincial Athletics event from 02 – 04 March 2023 at Kenneth McArthur Synthetic Athletics Track Stadium in Potchefstroom.
