The North West Department of Education is disturbed by the burning of a principal office and a classroom at Mothelesi Secondary school at Shaleng Village near Pampierstad on Saturday morning, 28 January 2023.
It is reported that at 06:00 on Saturday morning, 28 January 2023, the school principal received a call from a learner residing near the school that the school was on fire.
The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi condemned the torching of the school.
“I take this time to strongly condemn the torching of Mothelesi Secondary School. Such incidents they delay the delivery of quality education to the learners. This incident is going to exacerbate the infrastructural backlogs faced by the province. I want to call the law enforcement agencies to apprehend anyone behind this horrible incident”, said MEC Motsumi.
MEC Motsumi indicated that 2 photocopies, 1 printer, 1 fridge, classroom furniture and schools files were damaged by the fire.
The learners who were supposed to attend extra lessons on Saturday could not attend due to the fire.
The cause of fire is still unknown.
The MEC has appealed to members of the public to work with the Department to protect school infrastructure. The Department relies on communities to ensure that the much-needed resources are taken care of.
