The North West Department of Education’s MEC, Viola Motsumi, is actively engaging with numerous underperforming schools throughout the province through special visits. This initiative has proven effective, as school principals are afforded the opportunity to express the challenges they encounter.
Setlopo Secondary School has been beset by administrative difficulties, resulting in the closure of the school by members of the School Governing Body (SGB), which has negatively impacted learners timely attendance of lessons in recent months.
With only 12 days remaining until the final matriculation examinations, MEC Motsumi conducted an announced visit to Setlopo Secondary School to assess the school’s strategies for enhancing academic performance.
The school principal reported that matric candidates will be placed on an incubation plan throughout the examination period. The school achieved a 75% pass rate during the preparatory examinations.
MEC Motsumi continues to inspire school principals to aim for a performance rate of at least 86% and above, in an effort to enhance the matric results of the province compared to the previous year.
“Members of the SGB in our schools should function as a supportive body for our schools rather than solely focusing on financial matters; they must prioritize the curriculum,” says Motsumi.
The North West Department of Education is committed to encouraging more schools to achieve performance levels between 86% and 90% to position the province favorably when results are announced next year.
