NW EDUCATION READY TO RESUME SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM

Pursuant to Basic Education minister’s call for provinces to resume National School Nutrition Program (NSNP), the North Department of Education is underway to feed identified learners in the province as of Wednesday, 27 January 2021.

The North West province caters for 741 255 of learners in 1326 schools that are on quintile1,2 and 3. Identified special schools will also be catered for.

Food handlers from each school will be at school to attend to learners in full adherence to Covid-19 protocols.

MEC for Education in the Province, Mmaphefo Matsemela says the province is ready to resume with the program to alleviate pressure from families.

“We will ensure that every learner in the province is fed. I encourage parents who need our assistance to release learners to come over to school for servings. Learners when they come to school should wear their school uniform for easy identification by teachers. This is an interim measure until schools reopen thereafter learners will be served in their respective schools. Our aim is to restore dignity of every child and help families where we can”, said Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela also encourages school to register every learner it serves in a day so as to quantify the number of learners each school feeds in a day. This will be done to avoid food wastage.

NSNP aims to enhance learning capacity of learners through the provision of a healthy meal.
