This follows the Minister of Basic Education Department’s amended directions regarding the dates for the reopening of schools to provide for the 2021 academic year, and measures to address, prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19 within the department as a whole.
The dates for the reopening of schools are as follows:
• 25 January 202: Principals, the Senior Management Teams (SMTs) including Education Assistants and General Assistants (Basic Education Initiative) and non – teaching staff.
• 01 February 2021: All educators
• 15 February 2021: All learners.
The North West Department of Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela visited Marikana Secondary and Areaganeng Secondary schools to monitor Covid – 19 compliance and both schools are in Marikana area. MEC Matsemela indicated that their number one priority during the return of teachers and learners to school is health and safety.
“On behalf of the department, I would like to welcome all the Senior Management Teams of all schools. We are returning back to school under the adjusted alert Level 3 lockdown regulations. As a department I wish to emphasize that health and safety is our priority number one for both teachers and learners. Everyone entering our school premises will be subjected to wear their face masks, screen for temperature, sanitize and keep a social distance of 1, 5 meters.
“Yesterday the SMTs of different schools held their first meetings to plan for the 2021 academic year, others continued to receive the Learner Teacher and Supply Material (LTSM), whilst others dealt with the admission of learners. We believe that this period will benefit the schools to plan in detail when they welcome learners”, said MEC Matsemela.
All schools will identify Compliance Officers within the school personnel and their role will be to monitor the school compliance towards Covid-19 regulations.
MEC Matsemela will continue with her random visits to schools across the province for monitoring Covid – 19 compliance.
