WEDNESDAY SCHOOL SPORT LAUNCH A SUCCESS IN THE NW PROVINCE

It’s been balls and whistles all day as North the West Department of Education launched Wednesday school sport at the Ikageng stadium in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, 02 August 2023.

A total of 950 learners from different schools across the province gathered to play in five sporting codes, namely football, netball, chess, volleyball, and basketball.

The teams from all four districts played friendlies with sterling wins such as Bojanala taking the basketball trophy, Dr Kenneth Kaunda winning in netball and football,
Ngaka Modiri Molema in chess and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts winning in volleyball.

MEC for education in the North West province Viola Motsumi says the launch was a success and looks at improving the much-needed school sports infrastructure.

“I am pleased with the success of the launch. The enthusiasm and excitement of our learners as they play lightened the mood. This is something that is needed to boost their academic morale.
“As the department, we will ensure schools have adequate infrastructure to boost our sports. We want to produce all-rounded learners in and outside the classroom.

“We aim at moulding a drug-free society and reducing learner pregnancy and absenteeism.
Our future renowned sportsmen will come out of these brilliant minds”, Motsumi expressed.

Overall, schools will be playing 16 sporting codes every school Wednesday which include hockey, cricket, and rugby, among others.
