The North West Department of Education sought efforts to bring the classroom closer to learners whilst they are through a digital program called “Dial a Tutor” which was recently launched at Onkabetse-Thuto Secondary school on Wednesday, 05 August 2020.

Dial-a-Tutor is a contact solution of calling a toll free number which aims to provide all high school learners from Grade 8 – 12 across the province with an opportunity to interact with subject specialists to tutor them in their different areas of learning throughout the four week school break.

The long school break necessitated the department to provide learners with a learner specific attention from tutors without to resolve problematic areas in their subjects.

During the launch we spoke to learners as end-users who have tested the program and a 17 year old
Neo Macklein of Onkabetse Thuto Secondary school indicated that she called the toll free number and was assisted in Mathematics and Accounting whilst Mr. Percy Modillane who is a participating Subject Specialist for Business Economics highlighted that the programme has given learners an opportunity to raise questions without fear of their classmates.
He further highlighted that teachers as well are beneficiaries of the programme because they also call to request materials for their subjects.

Provincial MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela encouraged learners to utilise the toll free number effectively.

“I take this time to encourage learners to strive on until you realise your dreams. I also implore our school community in the form of parents and teachers to embrace this program as well as to support learners to utilise the platform in order for it to be successful.

“We understand that you are approaching exam time under a serious pandemic and as such the department will provide the Grade 12 learners with psycho-social support in October just before year-end examinations,” said MEC Matsemela.

The number for learners to use to dial-a- tutor is 0800 383 383 and can be called between Monday to Friday at 07:00 (Morning) to 20:00 (evening).
