LAUNCH: “DIAL-A-TUTOR” PROGRAMME TO ASSIST HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS

NW EDUCATION TO LAUNCH A “DIAL-A-TUTOR” PROGRAMME TO ASSIST HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS

The North West Department of Education will be launching a “Dial-a-Tutor” programme which is a contact solution to enable high school learners across the province to have access to subject specialists (Tutors) through a toll – free number.

This is a strategy devised by the provincial department to assist learners during the four week long school break as pronounced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Learners in some of the lower grades in primary and high schools have not returned to school since closure in March 2020 due to the Covid -19 threat.

Many leaners do not have access to virtual learning and have remained behind in their studies. The dial a tutor initiative is intended to bring the classroom closer to the learner.

The Provincial MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela emphasized that the initiative is going to help all high school learners.

“As a nation we are confronted by a unique challenge and it makes the education sector to be the most affected due to Covid-19 virus. As a result, we came up with this solution in order to assist learners whilst they are at home.
With this initiative learners are going to learn beyond the classroom. It will allow them free access to subject specialists and it comes at no cost at all. This solution allows learners to leave their contact details and be contacted once tutor is available”, said MEC Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela further highlighted that Grade 8 and 9 learners will be assisted with Social Science, Natural Science, Mathematics, Economics and Management Sciences.

“Learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 will be assisted with their content subjects namely: Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, History, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. This innovation is an additional intervention to the available efforts to assist learners. The learners will be assisted by the highly qualified tutors who are subjects specialist in their areas. We are appealing to parents to encourage learners to utilize this service”, said MEC Matsemela.
