Grade 6 NW learner raped on her way home
North Education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela condemns with strongest terms the disturbing incident of rape of concerning a Grade 6 learner of Retladira Primary School in Vryburg which occurred on Tuesday, 28 January 2020.
According to the school report, the incident happened outside school premises at around 13:00.
The school was hosting inter-house athletic competitions and three learners bunked the session and sneaked out using the school guard’s gate. Along the way they encountered an unidentified man who led them to the heart of the bush threatening them with a knife. While raping the Grade 6 learner, two others escaped and sought for help.
MEC Matsemela condemns this act as demonic and inhumane.
“It is sad that learners would sneak out and bunk classes or any school activities. These activities are carried out for their mental and physical development. We totally condemn this act. It is sadder to know that children of school going age would have to witness a sick, demonic and inhumane society where men are prying after them. We wish SAPS will handle the swiftly and put the perpetrator behind bars”, Matsemela expressed.
The department has sent social workers to visit the learner and family at her home for counselling. Counselling will also extend to the rest of the school. A police case of rape is opened.
