Disability Awareness Month

The North West Department of Education has deemed it necessary to join the country in celebrating the Disability Month that is being celebrated every year from the 03rd of November – 03rd of December.

The Disability Month celebration is meant to represent the disabled persons who are disregarded and sidelined by the communities around South Africa. It was mainly planned to demystify the misconception that the disabled learners cannot do anything for themselves and for the communities at large. 7 schools from Dr Kenneth Kanda Districts, namely: Ikalafeng Special School, Die Wilge High School, Keurhof, Daeraad, North West Secondary school for the Deaf, Janie Schneider, ES le Grange were invited to participate in the activity that took place from 24 to 25 November 2023.

The main purpose was to ensure that advocacy and skills offered by special schools are well recognized by community and stakeholders. It was also to make an awareness of the importance of learners with disabilities and the critical role that they play in schools. Among the 7 schools, Keurhof specializes in producing steel products, like Braai Stand Pots and Die Wilge High School in Arts Crafts, Baking, etc. Bongani Zungu from Keurhof Special School showcased his talent by performing a song that will enable him to represent South Africa at New York from 23 June to 1 July 2024.

This showcase took place at Matlosana Mall, in Klerksdorp Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. The event was successfully graced by the presence of acting director of Learner Social Support Services Ms Lucy Tong, acting CES Ms Gertrude Mtotoba, Mr Baebae Masoa CES From the office of the district Director, Principal and Learners from the district and departmental officials from District and corporate.
