LEARNERS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION ACCIDENT
The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela was shocked to be informed about a terrible head on collision accident which involved learners who were travelling in two Quantum taxis between Jouberton Township and Ellaton in Klerksdorp on Tuesday, 13 August 2019.
It is alleged that the 22 learners from Mofatlhosi Primary, Educators, Milner High, Klerksdorp Technical, Glenlee Private and Keurhof were travelling to their different schools at the time of the accident between 07:30 in the morning. The injured learners were transported to Ancron and Tshepong Hospitals in Klerksdorp.
Unfortunately one of the taxi drivers lost his live at the scene of the accident, whilst 5 learners were reported to be very critical at the hospital.
The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela who was shocked by the accident wished all learners involved in the accident a speedy recovery.
“On behalf of the department I wish to convey my sincerest condolences to the family of the driver who lost his life during the accident. I would also like to wish all learners a speedy recovery. This accident has happened at a very critical period in the education system because we are now preparing learners for their Preliminary examination. However, I am confident with God the Almighty they will soon be back to school to write their examinations”, said MEC Matsemela.
MEC Matsemela further appealed to all drivers to be very cautious on the road when they transport learners to their different schools. MEC further indicated that, about 10 learners were in a stable condition at the hospital.
Immediately after the accident, the department arranged counselling and support for the learners who were involved in the accident.
The department reported that six learners were later discharged after minor check-up.
