MEC MOTSUMI CONGRATULATES THE ELECTED PROVINCIAL RCL COMMITTEE

The North West Department of Education is the first province to successfully host the democratically elected 2023 Representative Council of Learners (RCL) elections on Saturday, 22 April 2023 at Sparkling Waters Hotel in Rustenburg.

The election process which started at school level to elect the representative council of finally ended up with the election of the provincial structure for learners.

The purpose of the RCL is to afford the student body, an opportunity to participate in activities that concern the learners directly or indirectly, in the functioning of the school, and to instil in them a sense of responsibility, encourage school loyalty and respect for authority, in order to prepare them for their adult lives.

Each district was represented by their five executive members. These executive members had an opportunity to elect the provincial structure amongst themselves under strict measures set by the North West Department of Education.

The 2023 RCL provincial committee are as follows:

– Ontshireleditse Mochikwane from J.M. Ntsime Secondary School in Mogwase, Moses Kotane Local Municipality was elected as the President of the RCL

– Ntokozo Mlungwana from Bethel High School in Putfontein near Coligny (Ditsobotla Local Municipality) was elected as a Deputy President.

– Paballo Sebopelo from Mmabatho High School in Mmabatho near Mafikeng (Mafikeng Local Municipality) was elected as the Secretary

– Mohau Mphanya from Coligny Secondary School in Lichtenburg (Ditsobotla Local Municipality) was elected as the Deputy Secretary

– Thato Ngwenya from HTS Klerksdorp in Klerksdorp (Matlosana Local Municipality) was elected as a Public Relations Officer

The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi congratulated the elected provincial RCL committee.

“On behalf of the entire department l take this time to congratulate the elected RCL committee and wish them the best of luck in office. They have outdone themselves in reaching this level of leadership. I want to assure them support and guidance during their term.

“As a department we do not only focus on producing academics only for the labour market but we identify the potential of individual learners in other aspects such as in leadership. Our country shouldn’t run short of leaders, as a department we are able to identify such a potential at a tender age and nurture it accordingly. These leaders were elected in a fair and transparent manner”, said MEC Motsumi.

MEC Motsumi further said that, the department is going to train them to understand their responsibility as the Provincial Structure.

The Provincial Representative Council of Learners will act as the recognised channel of communication between the Learners, teachers, parents and the department.
