A 25-YEAR-OLD TEACHER FOUND DEAD
The North West Department of Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela was deeply saddened and disheartened by the murder of a 25-year-old teacher at Magong Village near Rustenburg.
The teacher was allegedly strangled at her home near Moruleng in Moses Kotane Local Municipality on Monday, 29 June 2020. The police have opened a case murder.
She was originally from Makgobistad Village near Mafikeng, and was a Life Science teacher at Makoba Secondary School. After completing an Education degree in 2018 at the North West University, Mafikeng Campus, she joined teaching at the beginning of 2019.
Expressing her feelings of hearbreak, MEC Matsemela said:
“On behalf of the department I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the family and the entire school community. This unfortunate incident happens at a time when our country is grappling from the chains of Gender Based Violence. It is one death too many. As a department we are fighting a common enemy called Covid – 19 and we do not expect to lose our teachers in this way.
“It is heart-breaking to lose a young teacher who could have had a long career in the teaching sector. Teachers play an important role of moulding the future of our country and as a society we need to take good care of33 them and protect them. A nation without teachers is a doomed society, teachers are a light to the community. I am appealing to the police to arrest the perpetrators of this heinous act. They should rot in jail”, said MEC Matsemela.
MEC Matsemela is expected to visit the bereaved family in Makgobistad Village on Thursday, 02 July 2020 at midday.
