READING TO BE MADE FASHIONABLE IN NW – MEC MATSEMELA

Education MEC in the North West province Mmaphefo Matsemela has met with the management of Bojanala District at J.M. Ntsime Secondary School as part of her continuous engagement sessions in all four district – Thursday, 01 August 2019…

In her address MEC Matsemela highlighted that reading should be fashionable at all schools.

“As a department of education, we are the agents of change. Parents should establish reading corners at their homes. They should put newspapers, books and magazines for learners to read at all posts. Reading should be part of us, a learner who is used to reading will excel in their studies”, said MEC Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela further highlighted that the sector is confronted by learners who are unable to read.

“Some of the Grade 12 learners cannot read properly and the learners will not be able to contextualize the question paper. We should ensure that our learners are encouraged to read at all times. We should remember that knowledge is power”, Matsemela continued.

MEC Matsemela emphasised that education is a societal matter. She also encouraged leaders of faith-based organisations and of churches to support learners to read including the bible and other scriptural books in order to sharpen their reading skills.
