MEC MATSEMELA SHOCKED BY AN INCREASING RATE OF VANDALIZED SCHOOLS IN THE PROVINCE
The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela was shocked by an increasing number of vandalized schools in the province.
Last week the province reported 7 schools that were vandalized but currently the number has exponentially increased to 55. Every day during this lockdown the department continues to receive reports of burglary from different schools. In all the four districts, numbers of the vandalized schools have increased drastically.
In Bojanala District the following schools were reported:
1. Mfidikwe Primary school near Rustenburg: Broken into the Principal’s Office and took 3 Plasma Television sets- one was used as a CCTV monitor and the other a Samsung TV and DVR Recorder for CCTV footage.
2. Sekwati Primary School in Mmakau Village near Brits: A kitchen roof was stolen
3. Rooikoppie Primary school near Brits: Grocery for learners was stolen.
4. Kgwanyape Primary school in Modderspruit near Mooinooi: Copper pipes and basins destroyed in the school toilets.
5. Sekwati Primary school: stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
6. Fumane Primary in Madibeng stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
7. Marema Combined school in Derby stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
8. Lerome Primary school near Mogwase stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
9. Nkobong Secondary in Mogwase stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
10. Michael modisakeng secondary in Majakaneng: electricity cables stolen
11. Bonwakgogo Primary in Chaneng Village near Phokeng stolen school chairs, cutlery, and damaged school windows
12. Rakoko secondary near Sun City police Station: stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
13. Oom Paul Special in Rustenburg stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
14. Lerutlhware Primary school in Rustenburg: the roof tiles removed in the staff room and windows broken.
15. Agonkitse Primary: damaged the ceiling of classrooms and the Maths Laboratory.
16. Majakaneng Primary School: electricity cables stolen and the administration block ransacked.
17. Utsane Secondary school in Moretele stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
18. Zacharia Mankgatlheng in Moretele stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
19. Bafedile Secondary school in Moretele stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
20. Tlhaloganye Primary school in Moretele stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
Schools damaged in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District are as follows:
1.Matlhaleng Secondary school in Kanana Township near Klerksdorp: school fence is stolen.
2. Selang Thuto Primary in Kanana Township near Klerksdorp: 4 sewing machines were stolen, 5 surveillance cameras damaged and stolen toilet rolls.
3. Kanana Primary school near Klerksdorp: vandalized the solar panel of the school gyser.
4.Gatelapele Maquassie near Wolmaranstad: damaged male toilets and urinary systems stolen.
5. Akofang: Stationery, cleaning material, toilet papers, typek paper, gas bottles, 2 gas stoves security lights and DSTV decoder stolen
6. Khayalethu Secondary School in Khuma: 2 doors, vandalised, broken windows for Grade R and 4, 8 palisade panels stolen, and its bars, melodica and piano stolen.
7. Alabama Primary School near Klerksdorp: The Changing rooms at the sport facility were vandalized. Front door removed and stolen.Doors and frames badly damaged.
8. Goue Arend Primary school in Klerksdorp: three foundation classes damaged, stationery and cleaning materials stolen
9. Prestige Secondary school in Klerksdorp: 1 door stolen.
10. Madibeng primary school in Potchefstroom: garden tools and Grade R learning material stolen
11. Gatelapele Primary School in Wolmaranstad: stolen toilet basins and water taps
12. Boitireli Primary school in Potchefstroom: stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage

2. Mokgosi Prim. School: School Fence (newly erected fence) A hole is cut through the fence and 09 poles stolen.
3. Joseph SakuSecondary School: The roof is cut and the ceiling broken into.
4. Norakanelo Secondary school stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
5. Colinda Primary stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
6. Roshunville stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
7. Thuto – Lore Secondary school stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage

10. Kudungwane stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
11. Moeti Primary school stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage

Ngaka Modiri Molema District
1. Senkgwe Primary school in Mafikeng: doors were broken and offices ransacked
2. Rekgonne Secondary School in Blydeville: mobile classrooms have been broken into for scrap yard metals.
3. Letlhakane Primary school in Rietpan Village: stolen a photocopying machine, fence stolen and classroom windows broken
4. Monnamere Primary school in Dinokana Village: newly constructed fence cut out
5. Mosega Primary school in Welbedacht: stolen stationery and groceries
6. Tirisano Secondary school id Delaryville: stolen and vandalized the roof
7. Mosiami Midred Primary school in Mafikeng stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
8. Diphetogo Primary school in Mafikeng stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
9. Sebopiwa Molema Secondary school in Mafikeng stolen items to be confirmed at a later stage
10. Moatlhodi Primary school in Mafikeng classrooms vandalized
MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela visited Bonwakgogo Primary in Chaneng Village near Phokeng to view the extent of damages from the schools.
“I am totally shocked and disappointed at the increasing rate of vandalism taking place in our schools. Criminals should not be allowed to damage and destroy the future of our learners, this is totally unacceptable. I personally went to Bonwakgogo Primary school to see the extent of the damages and I became so emotional to witness the destruction that happened there. This poses a serious draw back to the department, when we resume with our studies learners will not be having their resources due to criminals.
“We cannot allow criminals to do as they wish with the school properties of our learners. These schools belong to the community and they should work together with the police to apprehend the suspects. I want to thank those active School Governing Bodies and the broader communities who are working hard for these criminals to be arrested.”, said MEC Matsemela.
Matsemela further pleaded with the relevant authorises to ensure that people charged with breaking schools should be handed long prison sentences
