MEC MATSEMELA HAILS A THREE YEAR SENTENCE OF A PARENT WHO ASSAULTED A TEACHER AT SCHOOL

The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela hailed the three year sentence passed by the Mogwase Magistrate Court to a parent who assaulted a teacher at a court hearing held on Monday, 12 August 2019.

It is alleged that on 22 February 2019, a teacher at Leama Primary school, Tlhatlhaganyane Village in Moses Kotane Local Municipality was assaulted by a parent with a stick filled with sharp objects.

It was reported that around 7:30 during the arrival of teachers at the school, they found a parent waiting for the victim outside the school yard. Immediately after their arrival the parent assaulted the teacher and causing serious bodily injuries. The teacher sustained injuries to the back of her head, right hand elbow, fractured middle finger on the right hand and the two small fingers no longer working.

The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela applauded the Mogwase Court for finally sentencing the parent who assaulted the teacher at Leama Primary school.

“On behalf of the department I take this time to applaud the Mogwase Court for passing the 3 year sentence to the parent who assaulted a teacher. This will pass a strong message to all those who wanted to assault both our teachers and learners at school. This sentence will remind them that schools should be treated as centres of acquiring knowledge not war zones.  Our communities should always know that, teachers are parents to the learners at school”, said MEC Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela further highlighted that the teacher profession is the mother of all professions and it should be taken care. She said every nation depends on the teachers.
