MEC MATSEMELA CONGRATULATES EDWARD MOTHIBI FOR WINNING THE 2019 COMRADES MARATHON

Durban – The North West Education and Sport Development MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela congratulated Edward Mothibi for winning the 94th Comrades Marathon which started at 5:30am outside Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finished at Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban on Sunday, 09 June 2019.

Edward Mothibi has claimed his very first Comrades Marathon win in his second race having made his debut in last year’s Down-Run. Mothibi who is 34 years old hails from Magogoe – Koikoi near Mafikeng and is working at Impala Mine near Rustenburg.

The Education and Sport Development MEC, MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela highlighted that the North West province is now known for its dominance in the Comrade Marathon.

“On behalf of the department I would like to congratulate Edward Mothibi for his sterling performance. He is a star worth to be celebrated in our province and the young learners will be motivated and inspired by his performance. Now this has made the entire country to know that our province as a dominant figure in the Comrades Marathon”, said MEC Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela further indicated that, the province is extremely excited about Mothibi’s achievements, because he is following in the footprints of the Kelehe brothers (Andrew and Gift) and David Gatebe in winning the 94th edition of the Comrades Marathon. She emphasised that the North West has a rich history when it came to long distance running.

The Comrades Marathon spans 86km between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
