MEC MATSEMELA CONDEMNS ANY ACT OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AGAINST LEARNERS

The North West Department of Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela condemns in strongest terms any act sexual assault against learners across the province.

This follows after a teacher at Pinagare Secondary School in Taung has been arrested due to allegations of raping a 16 years old Grade 10 learner. The teacher was released on bail yesterday, 09 Tuesday 2021.

The MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela indicated that the alleged teacher has been placed on a precautionary suspension pending the investigations.

“I hereby wish to condemn in its strongest terms any case of sexual assault against any learner within the province. The department has placed the alleged teacher under a precautionary suspension pending investigation. The department views these allegations on a very serious light and the precautionary suspension will allow investigations to happen without any interference. I am pleading with our learners not keep quiet whenever someone is harassing them and they should report to their parents, principals or any teacher that they trust”, said MEC Matsemela.

Matsemela further indicated that the Wellness team from the Department of Education has arranged counselling for the learner, family, other learners at school including teachers affected by the incident.
