NW EDUCATION TO HOLD PROVINCIAL ATHLETICS COMPETITIONS

The North West Education department will be hosting the Provincial Athletics competitions for both primary and high school learners on 6 to 7 March 2020, at McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom.

The primary purpose of sports in schools is to promote mass participation amongst the learners. Mass participation is part of social cohesion and nation building as advocated by the White Paper 6 on sports and recreation.

A total 840 learners from primary and high schools from across the province will be competing in athletics. The learners (boys and girls) will be competing in the Track events of 100 meters to 500 meters, whilst the Field events will be on high jump, long jump, discus throw, javelin and heddles.

The primary schools will start the athletics competition by embarking in a 5 kilometre race on the first day. The high schools to open their tournament with a 10 kilometre race to mark the official opening of the competitions.

The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela wished good luck to all the learners who will be participating in the athletics competitions.
“On behalf of the department I wish good luck to all the learners who will be taking part in the athletics competitions. Physical activity promotes a healthy lifestyle and reduces obesity amongst the youth. Exercising makes the brain to work better therefore it is important to allow learners to participate in sports”, said MEC Matsemela.

The National Athletics competitions for the high schools will be held on 18 to 21 March 2020 in Boksburg, whilst the primary school competitions will be held on 25 to 27 March 2020.
